A couple of shots from last nights meetup. People braved the cold and the snow to get stuff done.
Since confirming a date for the second London Nightowls event last week we’ve received a number of emails asking us for more info on the idea behind Nightowls and what goes on at our meetups.
So here goes..
The idea behind nightowls is to provide a free space where people can get together to work on their own side projects out of normal working hours.
Whilst most people who attend are typically in the web industry, designers, coders etc, the meetup really suits itself to anyone who simply has too much to do for the standard 9-5 working day and is looking for somewhere to come to get together with other busy people working on their own projects.
Nightowls was founded in April 2010 in New York when founders Amber Lambke and Allan Grinshtein tweeted their desire to find somewhere they could work late into the night other than the local coffee shop, somewhere they could meet new people and be more productive.
The Nightowl concept quickly took off in cities around the world, including Stockholm, Melbourne, Tel Aviv, San Francisco and many more places.
In London Sarah Longworth and Mark Stephens came across the idea and looked for a meetup happening in London. When they discovered that one didn’t yet exist, they decided to bring Nightowls to the city.
The first London Nightowls was held in September 2010 at the fantastic coworking space of eOffice in Soho and attendees included a mix of entrepreneurs, journalists, web designers, developers, and bloggers amongst others.
The BBC found out about our meetup via twitter too, and came along to meet us and do an interview about the late night co-working concept for the BBC 5 live out-riders show.
The atmosphere at a Nightowls meet up is very friendly and relaxed. People are requested to bring along their own laptops and work equipment but wifi is provided by our host along with much needed tea and coffee. As we work into the small hours we also chip together and order in some late night snacks.
The advantages of co-working are numerous. Many people benefit from the collaborative aspect, looking to bounce ideas of other people and get fresh new input into their projects. For others, especially people such as freelancers who may work at home or don’t work alongside others, often coming into a new environment and getting a chance of scene can prove extremely valuable.
Whether you are looking to get ideas and input on your project from others or if you prefer to just get your headphones on and focus on your work without distraction, it’s completely up to you how you want to use the time at a Nightowls event.
If you would like to book a place at our next meetup on December 1st beginning at 7pm please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org beforehand to reserve your place.
We look forward to seeing you there!
The next London Nightowls meetup will be held on 01 December 2010 at 7.00pm.
We are meeting at eOffice Soho, but as usual please send an email to London Nightowls beforehand to reserve a place.
Hope you can make it.
London Nightowls unleashed!
On our launch night last month Jamillah from BBC 5 Live’s Outriders programme came to look around the space and find more about what we were up to.
The first London Nightowls happened last night and here are the photos!
Attendees included a web designer, html developer, writer, motor journalist, digital entrepreneur, photographer and more!
We had a really fun evening, nice chat, nice music, nice pizza and most importantly got a lot of work done.
Thankyou to eOffice too for giving us a home for the night.
In less than 24 hours the first London Nightowls will be kicking off at eOffice Soho. We still have a couple of places left so please email us at email@example.com to book a place.
We’re very excited to announce the first London Nightowls will take place this month, on Wednesday 22nd September!
We have already started to receive requests for places, so if you would like to attend please send us an email at: firstname.lastname@example.org
We look forward to co-working with you!
